On Saturday afternoon 8 May a record number of parents attended the parents' day. At the general meeting in the hall, parents were welcomed by the Junior Choir, singing ever so sweetly and beautifully! Aunty Gertie and the Grade 1 to 3 teachers had taught them so well that they were able to sing and move all on their own, while two of them conducted the choir themselves. Thereafter the audience was entertained by the Grade 6s who performed the humurous Afrikaans poem "Die Snippermandjie" (waste basket). Many parents were pleasantly surprised by the good progress this group was making with their additional language under the guidance of Aunty Alida, Mrs. Alida Vermaak.
In his message based on the scripture reading about Noah's ark, the principal, Mr. Andre Dreckmeyr, encouraged parents to invest in the education and spiritual guidance of their children before it is too late and they leave home. He informed parents about enrichment activities presented by the school. Examples mentioned were Conquesta Olympiads for Gr. 1 to 7, International benchmarking tests for Gr. 6 to 9, intensive teaching of basic Maths before Gr. 7, educational excursions and visits, career guidance for Grade 9 to 12 in the form of planned psychometric tests and the provision of a Bursary Directory for tersiary studies. The new policy of accepting only 6 year olds turning 7 during the Grade 1 year, was explained. He emphasised that sending young children to Pre-school and Grade R was the best way to prepare them for Grade 1, and also that sending learners to our own primary school was far better than trying to get them into Tshwane Christian School only when they have to go to High School, because many learners would then be too far below the expected level.
The principal also reported on the upgrading of facilities, such as the current painting of roofs. He stressed the importance of paying school fees regularly. Parents were requested to ensure that learners wear the correct winter school uniform and to get actively involved in solving bus transport problems.
Thank you to every parent, guardian and teacher who was present. You were part of a joint effort to improve our learners' education.
