On 5 May, about 120 learners in Grade 3, 4 and 5 attended the exciting Freaky Science Show in our own hall. Professor Freaky and mischievous Debbie demonstrated basic science concepts. First they explained words like "science", "theory" and "experiment" in a fun way. Then they performed several spectacular experiments. Learners learnt what substances, fluids and gases are. The best part was to see what happens if you mix them together! Everyone will remember that water and oil are immisscible (don't mix) and that oil is lighter than water. The lava lamp experiment showed that sugar makes the oil heavy enough to go down to the bottom of the bottle, but as soon as the sugar dissolves in the water, the blob of oil will bob up to the surface again. It is very difficult to mix maizena and water and make it into a ball, called a colloid. If you pour vinegar onto bicarbonate of soda, your volcanoe will erupt with fizzy bubbles. It was proved that this process produces air (a gas), when balloons on bottles with vinegar and bicarbs inflated. The learners remained captivated and enthusiastic throughout the show. Each learner received a brochure with instructions and explanations of cool experiments that can be done at home.
